Training package development and review
Once an industry has demonstrated it has a training need, the Department of Education, Science and Training contracts an organisation - usually an industry skills council or other recognised training body - to develop a training package to meet that need.
On successful completion of a quality assurance process, training packages are endorsed by the National Quality Council for national use. To gain national endorsement, developers must provide evidence of extensive consultation and support within the industry area or enterprise. The training package is then subject to on-going monitoring and review.
It is important for registered training organisations to be aware of development and review processes. Although training packages are industry-led, training professionals can, and should, have input into these process to ensure that effective training programs can be developed to meet industry standards.
Where a package has been reviewed and a new version is available, training providers have certain responsibilities relating to the transition from the old to the new version. Some of these responsibilities relate to the actual registration as a training provider, while others relate to transitioning students to qualifications from superseded packages.
