Contextualising a training product
Contextualising is the tailoring of a training product (a training package or an accredited course) to meet the specific needs of clients and/or conditions - where modifications do not change the original product to the point where it requires separate accreditation. Clients would include industry sectors, enterprises and individuals.
Maintaining national consistency of qualifications is a key consideration when contextualising training products. Any contextualisation must ensure the integrity of:
- any existing endorsed national competency standards, or other standards forming the basis of the training package or accredited course
- Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications, and
- industry skill and portability requirements.
It is also important to consider the client group or industry when contextualising units of competency at the time of delivery. Care must be taken to:
- include content relevant to an industry (e.g. industry terminology, work practices)
- define a context through which the outcomes of a unit of competency will be achieved
- use enterprise-specific equipment, facilities and learning resources
- tailor assessment instruments to suit the needs of an industry sector or client group (e.g. workplace project, reasonable modification for an individual with a disability)
- include enterprise-specific contexts in the range of variables
- add relevant, enterprise-specific underpinning knowledge.
