About training packages
A training package is a set of nationally-endorsed competency standards, qualifications, and assessment guidelines for a specific industry, industry sector or enterprise.
Training packages describe the skills and knowledge required to be employable within a particular industry (competencies). These competencies are developed through extensive consultation and are validated by stakeholders within the relevant industry. The group of competencies for that industry are then endorsed by federal, state, and territory governments and approved for use throughout Australia.
The industry-led training package concept has received international recognition, and is viewed as a benchmark for vocational training in many countries.
As at 31 March 2007, there were some 78 industry and 8 enterprise nationally-endorsed training packages in Australia, and the resulting qualifications are recognised throughout the country.
Only registered training organisations are authorised to deliver training programs designed from training packages, and it is the responsibility of the individual registered training organisation to source and develop its own teaching, learning and assessment resources - these resources do not form part of the training package.
