Skills First and Recognition of Prior Learning

Queensland aims to have a vocational education and training system that encourages the formal recognition of its participants' skills first, and then offers high quality training in areas where more skills are needed.

Queensland has immense opportunities for continued economic and social growth, but these opportunities are being stifled by a low skills profile in the community. Rapidly changing industry needs and shifting demographics are placing both structural and long-term pressures on Queensland's skills and labour supply. Speeding up the process of skilling and qualifying our workforce is now a major priority.

Skills First Recognition of Prior Learning will play an important role in meeting Queensland's future skills needs, as it allows quick and efficient recognition of skills workers already have and provides a platform to upskill and help people gain new qualifications faster.

Recognition of Prior Learning is also an integral component of the vocational education and training system in Australia. Under Standard 8 of the Australian Quality Training Framework registered training organisations have an obligation to provide recognition of prior learning to all applicants on enrolment.
