Industry skill shortages

The Commonwealth Government's Australian Workplace website provides information on emerging industries and employment trends in Australia and Queensland.

Of particular interest are the following links addressing industry skill shortages:

The Skill Shortages, Vacancy Trends and Job Outlook Vacancy Report on the Australian Workplace website incorporates and replaces the Skilled Vacancy Survey bulletin. The Information and Communications Technology Vacancy Index provides a broad indication of demand trends in the Information and Communications Technology sector.

The Skill Shortages, Vacancy Trends and Job Outlook Vacancy Report includes a summary of vacancies listed on Australian Job Search, sorted by occupation. Historical data from the 1990 Skilled Vacancy Survey is also available from links throughout the report.

The National and State Skill Shortage Lists are based on assessments undertaken by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. These assessments cover trades, professions, and information and communications technology skills, and are based on a number of indicators, including contact with employers who have recently advertised for skilled workers.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, through the Economic and Labour Market Analysis Branch and Labour Economics Offices in each state capital, monitors and assesses skill shortages. Although skill shortages are monitored closely, there may be localised or specialised shortages that are not reflected in these lists.

Assessment of professions, as well as information and communications technology skills, was undertaken in late 2002. Trades ratings are based on assessments prepared in mid-2002.
