Indigenous programs, strategies and policies
The department is assisting Indigenous people in Queensland to achieve their education, training and employment goals for their own and their community's development and economic prosperity. The department's programs, policies and strategies that support Indigenous Queenslanders are part of a larger whole-of-government effort to overcome the disadvantages faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in comparison to other Queenslanders. For Indigenous students, apprentices or trainees
- for mentoring and support contact your local Indigenous Employment and Training Support Officer
- services to support you through your training are available for TAFE Queensland students
- financial assistance is available for Indigenous apprentices or trainees and Indigenous students.
For Indigenous communities
- contact your local Indigenous Employment and Training Support Officer for employment and training advice
- work with your local Indigenous Employment Training Managers Program representative to identify and create sustainable employment and training opportunities and outcomes for your local community
- work with Wal-Meta to improve the employment rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Queensland public sector
- find out about funding advice for Government Funded Programs
- find out about the Indigenous Land Use Agreements and The Indigenous Employment Policy for Queensland Government Building and Civil Construction Projects (20% Policy).
For Employers
- contact your local Indigenous Employment and Training Support Officer for employment and training advice
- work with your local Indigenous Employment Training Managers Program representative to identify and create sustainable employment and training opportunities for Indigenous people
- find out about The Indigenous Employment Policy for Queensland Government Building and Civil Construction Projects (20% Policy), a policy that requires 20% of the employment hours on government construction projects in designated Indigenous communities and shires are dedicated to employment and training opportunities for local Indigenous people.
For Registered Training Organisations
- a local Indigenous Employment and Training Support Officer is available to support your Indigenous students through their training
- work with your local Indigenous Employment Training Managers Program representative to identify and create sustainable employment and training opportunities and outcomes for Indigenous communities
- work with Wal-Meta to help your Indigenous students move into employment in the Queensland public sector
- find out about the Indigenous Land Use Agreements and The Indigenous Employment Policy for Queensland Government Building and Civil Construction Projects (20% Policy).
- apply to become a preferred supplier to access funds for accredited training for Indigenous Queenslanders under the 2007 and 2008 Joint Indigenous Funding Pool Initiative.
For government agencies and employees

- work with your local Indigenous Employment Training Managers Program representative to identify and create sustainable employment and training opportunities and outcomes for your local Indigenous community
- work with Wal-Meta to improve the employment rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Queensland public sector. In addition to recruitment advice, Wal-Meta offers career advancement programs for Indigenous employees and cultural awareness training for government employees.
