The activities of the former Department of Employment and Training have been moved into two new portfolios reporting to new Ministers following the recent Queensland general election.
Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie appointed Rod Welford as Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts and John Mickel as Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations.
Former Justice and Attorney-General Director-General Rachel Hunter has been appointed as Director-General of the Department of Education, Training and the Arts.
Former Industrial Relations Director-General Peter Henneken is now Director-General of the new Department of Employment and Industrial Relations.

Queensland Skills Plan
The Queensland Skills Plan outlines the Queensland Government's policy framework to reform the state's training system to address skills shortages and build a more highly-skilled workforce. The 24 actions contained in the Queensland Skills Plan will work to develop a training system that works for industry and employers, trades, individuals and Queensland.

Under existing Administrative Arrangements, the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000; the Training and Employment Regulation 2000; and the Agricultural College Act 2005 are administered by the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts on behalf of the Minister.

The Queensland Department of Employment and Training employs over 8200 people in offices, TAFE institutes, and an agricultural college, throughout Queensland. The Public Sector Employment Program is creating an additional 13 400 traineeship and 800 apprenticeship positions in government departments and agencies.
