Credit for previous experience
Apprentices and trainees may apply for credit for previous experience when commencing or recommencing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Credit for previous service or experience is applied against the term of the apprenticeship and or traineeship at the time of registration of the training contracts. Any credit that is applied reduces the duration of the apprenticeship or traineeship and changes the end date.
The training entry point is established during the negotiation of the training plan, and is the primary responsibility of the supervising registered training organisation, in consultation with the employer and the apprentice or trainee. Previous experience or service may also allow the apprentice or trainee to receive credit transfer and/or recognition of prior learning through the supervising registered training organisation.
A graduate of a pre-vocational course may receive credit and exemptions when undertaking an apprenticeship if the training content of the apprenticeship is aligned to the pre-vocational course content. The general credit arrangements for a pre-vocational course allow 'time' credit against the nominal term of the appropriate apprenticeship and exemption from the training content identified for wage level 1 of the apprenticeship. Pre-vocational credits do not apply to traineeships. A listing of approved pre-vocational courses is available on Queensland Training Information Service.
Information on pre-vocational credits that apply to individual apprenticeships can be obtained through the Queensland Training Information Service by accessing the specific apprenticeship.
For more information on applying for credit, read the fact sheet on credit for previous service or experience.
