School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

Overview
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow high school students - typically Years 11 and 12 - to work with an employer as paid employees whilst studying for their Senior Certificate and a vocational qualification.

Getting started
To start a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, you must find an employer and have the support of your parent or guardian, and your school. You and your parent or guardian need to sign a training contract with your employer.  You need to talk to your school about how work and training for the apprenticeship or traineeship will fit in with your school timetable.

Choosing an apprenticeship or traineeship
Before making a decision, you should think about the type of environment you would like to work in (for example, outdoors, in an office) and the things that interest you.

Who is eligible?
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships are designed for Year 11 and Year 12 students. To do a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, you must be enrolled in study that will result in a Senior Certificate or equivalent, have an employer, and have a training provider.

Dealing with problems
Issues may arise during a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship similar to those which can arise during mainstream apprenticeships and traineeships.  The solutions are also similar.

Training contract
Where a school-based apprentice or trainee does not complete the apprenticeship or traineeship by the time they leave school, the training contract must be amended so they can complete under full-time or part-time training arrangements.

How to make changes to your training contract such as your training arrangements, address, employer and last name. How to request extensions if you will not finish your training in time.

Pay and conditions
Unlike other apprentices and trainees, school-based participants are not paid for their time spent undertaking training delivered by the supervising registered training organisation. Additionally there are other conditions that apply to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Credit for previous experience
Apprentices and trainees may apply for credit for previous experience when commencing or recommencing an apprenticeship or traineeship.
