Finding a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship
Before choosing a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, you should think about:
- the type of environment you would like to work in (for example, outdoors, in an office)
- the things that interest you
- the types of school-based apprenticeships and traineeships available
- the skills you would like to learn
- the subjects you could study at school to complement your school-based apprenticeship or traineeship
- who you can talk to in the area that interests you to find out the positives and negatives of a job.
Once you have thought about these questions, you need to follow some simple steps:
- Talk to your parents or guardians about your interest in becoming a school-based apprentice or trainee.
- Advise your career counsellor, guidance officer or vocational education and training coordinator at your school that you would like to get involved in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.
- Decide what school-based apprenticeship or traineeship you would like to do.
- You, your school, and your parent or guardian, need to identify a suitable employer
- Once you have secured employment, you can then enter into a training contract with your parent or guardian's consent.
Most apprenticeships and traineeships have been approved for school-based arrangements. A listing of all apprenticeships and traineeships is available on the Queensland Training Information Service.
