Five steps to apply for an overseas qualification assessment
If you are a Queensland resident, applying for an overseas qualification assessment can be completed in five simple steps.
Step 1 - Determine if you can apply
- You must be an Australian resident, or have permission to work or study in Australia
- you must be a Queensland resident
- you must have completed a formal technical or tertiary qualification overseas.
- check if your overseas qualification (higher education, post-secondary, technical or vocational qualification) is from one of the countries the Department of Education, Training and the Arts can assess from. For the complete list of Country Education Profiles, please visit the federal government's Australian Education International website.
- if your qualification is not from one of the listed countries, the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts may not be able to recognise your qualification. Visit the Australian Education International website for further information.
Step 2 - Complete the application form
- Download the overseas qualifications assessment application form [PDF 95kb]
- read the explanatory notes and information about the documents you will need to provide
- complete the application form.
Please note that documents in PDF (Portable Document Format) need Adobe Acrobat Reader to be read. Adobe Acrobat Reader is freely available from Adobe.
Step 3 - Collect the documents required for your application
- Collect certified copies of all the required documents including your qualifications, mark sheets or transcripts of study, and residency information. (Documents must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or a departmental officer)
- any non-English documents must be translated by either a National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) accredited translator, or an official translator. Find out more about the document translation service.
Step 4 - Complete the applicant checklist
Read the checklist on page 4 of the application form [PDF 95kb] and complete it to avoid delays in processing.
Step 5 - Send in your application, with the required documents
Submit your application to your local skills recognition unit.

How an application is assessed
When the department receives your application, we check to make sure all the necessary documents have been included. The department's officers then assess your qualifications using country education profiles published by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR).
If we need more documents to support your application, a departmental officer will contact you by telephone or letter.
When we complete your assessment, the department will send you a letter to confirm the result.
