Australian Department of Family and Community Services

The Department of Family and Community Services is a Federal Government department that looks after family assistance and community related matters such as child and student support, Community support, housing and carers and support for the aged. There are many programs and services available.

Centrelink

Centrelink is the Australian Government agency that looks after employment, and unemployment support as well as study and family assistance payments.

Centrelink has Disability Support Officers who can help people with disabilities through the maze of services on offer and help them find the right job for them. They can:

CRS Australia (Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service)

CRS Australia is an Australian Government agency that provides support for people with a disability in finding work after an accident or work injury. They provide vocational rehabilitation programs designed for each person's situation. The programs are designed and run by professional staff who work with the person, doctors and employers to get the best possible solution to suit all parties.

Disability Services Queensland

Disability Services Queensland (DSQ) is a Queensland Government department that provides accommodation support, lifestyle support, post-school, and family support to help people with a disability as well as their families.

Disability Information and Awareness Line (DIAL)
Disability Services Queensland maintains a database of information about support services for all types of disabilities which are available throughout the state. It is referred to as DIAL and includes details about publications and newsletters and information about different types of disabilities. You can contact DIAL by telephone on 1800 177 120.

Post School Services
Disability Services Queensland offers post school services to help people with high support needs to move from school to adult life. (This was formerly known as 'moving ahead').

Adult Lifestyle Support Program
The Disability Services Queensland Adult Lifestyle Support Program provides some funding for accommodation and lifestyle support for young people (over 18 years old) with high support needs. It allows people to keep the living arrangements of their choice and to be involved in their community.

Applications for the Post School Services - Adult Lifestyle Support Program are called in the first half of each year.

Department of Education, Training and the Arts

The Department of Education, Training and the Arts has a policy of education for all different people. They have a Disability Services Support Unit and the department funds School Transition Officers to help high school students with a disability make the move from school to life outside of school.

Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission provides a place where people can go to if they are being treated differently to everyone else at work or in public life because of age, race, gender or disability.

Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland

The Anti-Discrimination Commission of Queensland is a state government organisation that you can go to for help if you think that you are being discriminated against because of your gender, disability, age family responsibilities, culture or religion. The commission can help you try to remedy the situation. It also provides training and information to the public.

Australasian Network of Students with a Disability

The Australasian Network of Students with a Disability is a national student organisation for TAFE or University students with a disability. They host e-mail discussion groups and provide helpful study hints and tips for students with a disability.
