Reasonable expectations

People with a disability have the same right as any other person to vocational education and training. This right is protected by the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991) and the Australian Disability Discrimination Act (1992). The Queensland legislation is administered by the Anti Discrimination Commission Queensland.

Disability standards for education

There are also disability standards for education. The standards aim to tell public and private education providers the rights of students with a disability and what they have to do under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

Information about these standards is provided by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

Vocational education and training

Providers of vocational education and training must offer students with a disability opportunities and choices that are equal to those offered to other students. This means that some students are provided with some support. The training provider may need to make some adjustments to the way you enrol, how you do the course and how you use the services. You should not have to pay anything extra for the adjustments.

Any adjustments have to be reasonable to you and to the training provider. You should negotiate the adjustments you think you need with your training provider. You can help by contacting them as soon as possible to discuss what support you need.
