Support for apprentices and trainees

Apprenticeships and traineeships can be started while you are in your senior phase of secondary school. You can combine study towards your senior certificate with off-the-job training and paid employment, usually one day a week. Apprenticeships and traineeships can also be done full-time or part-time after you have left school. This provides choices if you have family commitments or other issues that mean you cannot attend work and study full-time.

There are a number of services that can help support apprentices and trainees:

Australian Apprenticeships Access Programme
Disabled New Apprentice Wage Support
Language, literacy and numeracy support
Senior Training Support Consultants

Australian Apprenticeships Access Programme

This program will help you to get ready for an apprenticeship or traineeship. The courses usually last 26 weeks. Then you are given help to find work, or to find an apprenticeship or traineeship. Find out more about the New Apprenticeship Access Program.

Language, literacy and numeracy support

Apprentices and trainees can get help with reading and writing, or with maths and numbers. When you draw up your initial training plan with your employer and your training provider you should talk about your support needs. This plan sets out the skills you have when you start and the skills you'll need during your apprenticeship or traineeship.

Contact your teacher or trainer about extra training or support or phone apprenticeships info on 1800 210 210 or the Reading Writing Hotline on 1300 655 506.
