Background
WorldSkills Australia was established in 1981 as an independent, not-profit organisation that promotes the standards and status of vocational training and job skills for young people across Australia.
WorldSkills Australia mission is "to challenge young people, their teachers, trainers and employers to achieve world class standards work skills and to promote the status of vocational education and training across Australia". In this work, WorldSkills Australia is supported by a team of over 5,000 world class volunteers.
WorldSkills Australia Competitions in Queensland
The Department of Employment and Training is committed to creating a society in which individuals can achieve personal and economic prosperity through learning, skilling and work.
Through a commitment to supporting, encouraging and promoting the involvement of young Queenslanders in WorldSkills Australia competitions the department is actively working to ensure vocational education and training in Queensland advances socially and economically - and remains globally competitive.
WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two year cycle - regional, national and international.
Talented young people, up to the age of 22, are invited to compete in the WorldSkills Australia regional competitions being held across Queensland in 2007.

- Demonstrate your ability to learn new skills and work under pressure

2006 National WorldSkills Competition
To compete in a WorldSkills Australia National Competition you must first compete in a regional competition.
The 2006 WorldSkills Australia National Competition is being held in Melbourne, May 5 to 7 at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre. The competition will consist of up to 400 young Australians competing in their respective skill or trade area to be recognised as a national champion.
Queensland will be represented by 65 young regional champions in 35 skill and trade categories. The Queensland team consist of 55 young adult and 10 school based apprentices and trainees.

International WorldSkills Australia Competition
WorldSkills International competitions are held every two years and hosted in a member country. The competitors, all from the 43 member nations, are selected from regional and national competitions. There are over 40 official competition trades that range from vehicle painting to hairdressing, floristry to plumbing, mechatronics to IT.
Australia became a member in 1981 and has participated in every international competition since. Queensland was represented at the 37th WorldSkills International Competition by Ben Page and Jared Boyle, held Helsinki, Finland during June 2005.
The next international WorldSkills competition will be held in Japan 2007.
