Support for job seekers
The Language, Literacy and Numeracy Programme aims to provide training to assist jobseekers to make a real improvement in their language, literacy and numeracy skills, increasing their chances of obtaining sustainable employment or undertaking further education and training. The program is funded by the Federal Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).
The programme has been designed to help remove a major barrier to employment and to improve participants' daily lives.
TAFE Queensland Language, Literacy and Numeracy classes are available in the following streams:
- Initial Language
- Basic Literacy and Numeracy
- Basic Language
- Advanced Literacy and Numeracy
Prospective students must be unemployed job seekers registered with Centrelink. Eligibility for 'Referral for Assessment' is established by a local Centrelink officer or a Job Network member, who will also outline other aspects of eligibility and criteria for training.
An individual pre-training assessment at a TAFE site conducted by a fully qualified teacher will then establish your training needs and goals.
For additional information on the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Programme, refer to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations or Centrelink.
Adult numeracy and literacy courses
TAFE Queensland offers a range of literacy and numeracy courses at each of the 11 Institutes, on most campuses, and at many off-campus sites. A variety of delivery modes may be available:
- day or evening part-time classes
- full-time courses
- individual tuition with a volunteer tutor
- courses integrating literacy with vocational training
- literacy and numeracy support for apprentices and trainees.
The first step is to contact your local TAFE institute to arrange an interview with a literacy teacher, to discuss literacy and numeracy needs and to assess current skills. You and your teacher will then plan the most appropriate training option.
Literacy and numeracy training is delivered through accredited curricula - Courses in Vocational Literacy and Courses in Vocational Numeracy.
Students are immersed in a wide variety of literacy and numeracy tasks and activities so that many skills are addressed. Texts and tasks relevant to your needs and interests are used in the learning process.
Volunteer tutors
Volunteer tutor training courses are delivered at all TAFE institutes. People wishing to become volunteer tutors enrol in an accredited part-time course to acquire basic skills and knowledge of the principles and practice of adult literacy learning.
Tutors may then work in a class, or one to one with a student, and receive on-going support in their role.
