In response to industry concerns, restrictions have been placed on access to school-based apprenticeships in the electrotechnology industry. Applications for school-based apprenticeships in this industry will only be considered on a case-by-case basis.
To assist with consideration of applications, the Queensland Utilities and Services Industry Training Advisory Board (QUSITAB) have developed a policy for assessing applications for school-based apprenticeships in electrotechnology.
The conditions that employers will be assessed against are summarised below:
-
training arrangements must be a minimum of a 4 weeks off-the-job release or the equivalent in an alternative format (for example, day release)
-
the apprentice must be in the workplace a minimum of 15 hours per week, preferably Monday - Friday, over each year (when not on a block release program)
-
a minimum of 80 days must be worked on-the-job each year
-
the minimum supervision requirements must be met in accordance with all relevant legislation, including the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000 and Electricity Regulation 1994
-
the appropriate facilities and range of work must be able to be provided by the employer.
The QUSITAB policy [PDF 220kb] is available online from the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts. The policy includes the rationale for the introduction of the policy, together with application requirements for potential employers.
All employers considering employing school-based apprentices must first receive approval through this application process. The department will not register a training contract unless the employer has first gained approval under the QUSITAB policy. Ideally, the apprentice should not be employed until after the employer has gained approval through this process.
Employers who are considering employing a school-based electrotechnology apprentice are encouraged to telephone Liz MacLeod, Research/Project Officer, QUSITAB on (07) 3216 9604 to discuss the requirements.
