Fact sheet 143: Extension of nominal term of an apprenticeship or traineeship

Where an apprenticeship or traineeship is due to end before the apprentice or trainee has completed all of the training required, the employer and/or the apprentice or trainee should apply to extend the training contract. The application should be lodged with the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts prior to the nominal completion date or, at the latest, 14 days after the nominal completion date.

The extension of nominal term of an apprenticeship or traineeship form [DOC 159kb], or a written application, may be used when applying for the extension.

Where the above form is not used, written applications must include the following:

The department will either approve or refuse to approve the extension of the apprenticeship/traineeship and advise all parties to the training contract by letter.

The Order - Apprentices' and Trainees' Wages and Conditions (Excluding Certain Queensland Government Entities) 2003 provides for progression through the wage levels of an apprenticeship or traineeship. It also provides for the extension a specific wage level or year of an apprenticeship or traineeship in certain circumstances. For more information refer to Clause 4.3 of the Order.
