Fact sheet 105: Training plans - for apprentices and trainees

Version 5

[PDF 55kb ]

A training plan for an apprentice or trainee is a document detailing the training to be delivered to the apprentice or trainee by the employer and supervising registered training organisation.

It is important that the skills required for the apprentice or trainee to perform their job competently are identified in the training plan. The minimum requirements for a training plan are contained in Fact sheet 112 Training plan-minimum requirements.

There must be a training plan for each apprentice and trainee.

The supervising registered training organisation is required by the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts to assist the parties to develop the training plan. A training plan must be negotiated, and the contents agreed to, by the apprentice or trainee, employer and the supervising registered training organisation. If the content is not agreed, it should not be signed. Where contentious issues cannot be resolved between the parties, they should seek help from the department.

The training plan should be finalised during the probationary period. The supervising registered training organisation will send copies of the agreed plan to all parties within seven days after the plan is signed.

A properly negotiated training plan will provide a structured approach to the development and attainment of skills for a particular qualification, and will:

Each work place is different. Therefore, the training plan must be individually tailored for each person.

Training plans can be altered if all parties agree, but only for minor issues. If the change is major-for example, a change of qualification or supervising registered training organisation-a new training plan must be prepared and signed.

The apprentice or trainee who is given every opportunity to practice and acquire the skills recorded in the training plan and fails to demonstrate those skills in the timeframe set, may have their training contract reviewed by the parties with the assistance of the department.

All training should be delivered during the term of the training contract. Where a supervising registered training organisation delivers training after the term of the training contract, departmental funding may not apply.
