Probation
Each apprenticeship and traineeship has a set probationary period. This gives you and your employer time to work together and decide whether to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship. Training should commence during the probationary period.
Probation begins on the day you and your employer agree to start the apprenticeship or traineeship. It usually lasts 90 days for apprentices and 30 days for trainees. To find out what the probationary period is for your apprenticeship or traineeship:
- visit the Queensland Training Information Service and search on your particular apprenticeship or traineeship
- telephone Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210
- contact your Australian Apprenticeships Centre.
Before the end of your probationary period, you and your employer must both decide whether you want to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship.
If you both decide to continue, you and your employer must complete the training contract, agree to work together for the length of the contract, and develop the training plan with your supervising registered training organisation.
If you need more time to decide whether or not you want to continue with the apprenticeship or traineeship, you can extend the probationary period. To do this, you must telephone Apprenticeships Info on 1800 210 210 before the end of the probationary period.
For more information, read the fact sheet on probationary periods.
