Strategy two: re-building relationships and trust
Research findings:
- Re-building relationships and trust (between tutors, workers, artists and the young people participating) encourages their continued attendance and successful program outcomes.
- Participation and retention rates of young people in arts based programs are affected by
- attributes of teaching staff
- their experience in working with young people
- manner in which staff interact with participants, and
- level of respect and empathy for young people demonstrated by staff.
- Clear staff roles with specific areas of responsibility are essential to the delivery of a successful program. Relevant expertise includes
- technical or industry expertise
- arts curriculum design or facilitation of the creative process, and
- youth support.
- Financial, practical and emotional support are factors that increased the likelihood of participants completing programs. Specifically, participants benefit from
- transport assistance
- provision of lunch
- fully subsidised program costs, and
- emotional support from youth workers who are in partnership with the project.
- Skilled and experienced staff, such as youth workers, are needed to support young people who have experienced or are still experiencing trauma including
- abuse
- rejection
- drug addiction
- homelessness, and
- violence.
