Strategy three: designing curriculum for learning through the arts
Research findings:
- Arts-based programs re-engage young people in learning and motivate their achievement of creative goals.
- Young people value the opportunity to 'make' or express their ideas to produce something that is theirs to keep or own.
- Opportunities to access equipment or Artist support to create their own designs, or music or images are highly valued by young people who are typically unable to access these resources.
- Young people value opportunities for experiential and sensory learning that includes tangible and high quality artistic outcomes.
- After completing their creative project participants commented on their increased level of confidence and stronger sense of achievement.
- Arts-based programs that have frequent and regular contact with young people appear to have a stronger impact on their desire to continue into training or employment. Attending a regular program was habit forming.
- Inclusive arts programs that cater for diverse abilities and learning styles are most effective in retaining participant attendance and engagement.
- Young people want programs to be fun. They preferred programs with interesting and relevant content, stimulating materials and rich and varied learning experiences.
