Biotechnology is the use of micro-organisms, plant and animal cells to produce materials such as food, medicine and chemicals that are useful in our everyday lives.
It also encompasses finding answers to many of society's problems through nature and to do this biotechnology is utilised in the form of bacteria, protozoa and algae to provide solutions to pollution.
Scientific techniques are also used to convert wastes into energy and organic fertiliser, under controlled conditions.
Our state's competitive advantage in biotechnology is based on its extraordinary biodiversity, which includes 19 terrestrial bioregions and 17 marine bioregions, as well as five world heritage regions covering 40 million hectares.
