Department history

Since its inception, the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts has undergone a number of structural and name changes. Formerly, the department's responsibilities were included in the Department of Employment and Training.

The history of the department can be traced back to 1882, with the opening of the first Brisbane Technical College under the auspices of the Brisbane School of Arts. By 1889, the scope of the college had grown and - with the introduction of the Brisbane Technical College Incorporation Act - control of the college was given to a council.
