Freedom of information procedures
The Freedom of Information Act 1992 requires information concerning documents held by government to be made available to members of the community, to allow members of the community to ensure that documents held by government concerning their personal affairs are accurate, complete, up-to-date and not misleading, and for related purposes.
If you have been unable to obtain access to information requested through your normal contact with the Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts, you may wish to seek access to documents that contain the information through an application under the Freedom of Information Act 1992.

Your application must be in writing, preferably on the Freedom of Information Application Form [PDF 111kb], which is available from the Freedom of Information Unit or any TAFE institute. If the application is in respect of documents that do not relate to your personal affairs, it should be accompanied by an application fee.
Your application should:
- identify the information of the document you are seeking
- provide as much information as possible about the document you wish to see
- identify in what area of the department you believe the document you are seeking is held
- indicate the type of access you are seeking (i.e inspection of the document or a copy of the document).
Application fee and charges
Applications relating to your personal affairs are free of charge. Applications of a non-personal nature will cost $33.50 to process. Non-personal applications that take longer than two hours to process will incur a processing charge of $20.00 per hour.

Correction of personal information
If you have access to a document that contains information concerning your personal affairs that is inaccurate, incomplete, out-of-date or misleading, you can apply in writing to have the information amended or corrected.
Your application should specify:
- what particulars you wish amended
- why you believe the information to be incomplete, incorrect, out-of-date or misleading
- the amendments you wish to make
- your address and telephone number so you can be advised of the result of your application.

Records retention
Personal and financial records are retained in accordance with the Queensland State Archives General Disposal and Retention Schedule for Administrative Records. All other records are retained in accordance with Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts procedural guidelines approved by the Queensland State Archives.
